2017 had marked the great technological advancement and come up with something that will act as a new trademark in the smartphone industry. ON one hand, we have tech giants like Apple and Samsung which present their flagship phones on the market that are iPhone7 and iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung s8 and on the other hand there were companies like Xiaomi and many other tried and still trying to capture the market with their flagships and ships the same bundle specifications at the reasonable price. One plus after the launch of Oneplus -3T come again with a bang and this time it represents its flagship smartphone Oneplus 5. It is said to be a flagship killer in the smartphone industry so let’s find out whether its worth it or not?

Design and Feel

The design is something that plays the major role is engaging the user interest and the companies like One Plus knows it very well and that is the reason they use hardware and industrial design methods to win the heart of the masses. One Plus 5 design did the same thing in its so-called flagship killer by changing its design and looks completely. As we see the Oneplus 5 from the back it somewhat resembles like iPhone 7 plus which is not a good news for the Oneplus fans and the front also does not mark any further changes and resembles its previous oneplus-3T. The back panel is made of anodized aluminum. But the overall build quality is excellent. Oneplus done a fab job by making Oneplus 5 slimmer at 7.25mm and lighter at 153 grams. OnePlus has chopped off quite a bit of the side borders, and the glass curves along its edges, which makes the phone feel great when you hold it.

Screen and Resolution

Oneplus 5 has a 5.5 inch AMOLED display and a resolution of 1920x1080p.The issue of touch latency that user face in Oneplus 3-T has now removed. The display supports the DCI-P3 color profile, which is also used by the iPhone 7.  As per the protection, it comes with gorilla glass 5 over the screen and also covers up the camera lens at the back. The front panel also consists of fingerprint scanner which is covered by the ceramic coating. One plus just settles with full HD display in oneplus5 while its other competitors were moving to 4K.The screen visibility washes out in the daylight which is considered to be one of the drawbacks of the oneplus5.

Hardware

In the initial face of its establishment, OnePlus gained the trust of the masses by offering top-end specifications, and the company hasn’t skimped here at all. The chipset is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, which has eight CPU cores capable of running at up to 2.45GHz. It has two variants, Slate Gray with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and Midnight Black with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. OnePlus also take a close look at the type of RAM and storage it has employed for the OnePlus 5 – LPDDR4X and UFS 2.1 respectively, with a two-lane ROM which is said to double the bandwidth for faster app install speeds and loading times. Oneplus also bundles NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and aptX HD support, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 MIMO antennas, GPS, and USB-OTG. The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the home button. It’s very quick at authentication and that means it managed to keep your smartphone saved from the spy hands.

Software

Oneplus 5 comes with new OxygenOS 4.5.0. It’s built on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and feels a bit more simplified than before, with smaller icons and text for the menus. Another highlight is that there’s no app drawer button now. Swiping right takes you to Shelf, which lets you customize widgets for the weather, set reminders, see your recent apps, and monitor cellular data and storage usage. This can be disabled if needed.

Camera

The dual camera setup of  OnePlus 5 is the central big attraction which Oneplus tries to make but in reality, it’s a major let-down. Firstly, the main camera lacks optical image stabilization (OIS) and produces soft images as a result. OnePlus tries to convince that its extra-wide aperture and electronic stabilization make OIS superfluous, but the only phone I’ve yet used in which that’s true is the Google Pixel. The second camera sensor has a 32mm focal length (35mm equivalent), 20-megapixel resolution and an aperture of f/2.6, but lacks EIS. To switch between the two sensors, you just have to hit the 2x button on the screen. According to OnePlus, optical zoom actually only goes up to 1.6x, and the rest is software but still “lossless”. You can then zoom in all the way up to 8x (digital zoom). However, the phone only actually switches to the second sensor when you’re in Photo mode and when there’s good lighting. If the light is not according to the idea condition, the phone sticks to the primary camera and basically does a digital zoom instead. Video quality is good and the wide resolutions range from 720p to 4K, with 1080p at 60fps also available. EIS works well at 1080p and 720p, but every now and then, there’s a “shimmering” effect in the scene, which is not very pleasant. Now talking about the front 16-megapixel sensor features a f/2.0 aperture which captures very sharp and detailed images in good lighting. It’s not too bad in low light either, as the new app adds a screen flash. You also get Auto HDR and a Beauty mode.

Battery

In Oneplus 5 the 3300mAh battery capacity is 100mAh lower than that of the OnePlus 3T, but instead of it, oneplus 5 managed to get good results. Our HD video loop test ran for around 15 hours 46 minutes With basic use, the phone would just about last an entire day. While real-world usage could have better, the Dash Charging feature makes up for this. The bundled 20W charger works very rapidly and there’s a cool animation on the lock screen when it kicks in. You’ll also get warning messages in the notification shade if any running app is draining the battery faster than it should.Overall it has a decent battery life.

Positives

It is Ergonomic and light with the Good primary camera as well as Very good system and app performance. Fast charging works very well Packed with handy software features.

Negatives

One of the downsides is the Uninspiring design. It has weak sunlight legibility. Camera lovers will feel that Dual camera setup is half-baked as well as No stabilization at 4K.

Bottom Line

It is a good flagship smartphone for those who always want to give a try to new gadgets. The dual camera setup though disappoints a little but still, it caters to deliver nice clicks along with high definition videos. As per the technical specifications are concerned it fully supplied what it promised to its users. Some cool features like on-screen fingerprint sensor, no app drawer dash charging makes it a perfect buy.
